All you need to know about the verb “to do”
DO
- interrogative auxiliary > “Do you speak German?”
- negating auxiliary > “I do not / don’t speak German.” “Didn’t you hear the alarm clock?”
- emphasising auxiliary > “So you do speak German, after all. Just a while ago, when I asked you, you said, you did not.”
- predicate (verb-noun combination) to do – ing > “He does a lot of reading.” “She does the shopping.”
- proper verb
- proper verb > “What can I do for you?”
- DO or MAKE ? “It does not matter.” “We will make a cake today!”
- predicate, expressions with “to do” > “Do me a favour.”, “to do well to” , “to do badly“, “How do you do?” …
